Filed under: 1, Male' News — Beautiful Maldives @ 7:00 am

The work will be carried out in collaboration with local and international agencies involved in such investigations.

The proposal made by Gaafu Alifu MP Abdulla Jabir and all the members who spoke at the Majlis meeting called on the Government to immediately cancel the licenses issued to foreign companies and to protect the rights of the Maldivian fishermen. The members said that since fisheries was one of the main industries of the country it was essential to improve the conditions for local fishermen in order to find a solution to the economic depression the country was currently in.

Nadal blows Murray away in final

Filed under: 1, Sports — Beautiful Maldives @ 10:39 am

Andy Murray was blown away by world number one Rafael Nadal as the Spaniard triumphed in the Indian Wells Masters 1000 final with a 6-1 6-2 victory.

Strong gusting winds in the Californian desert provided testing conditions, and rather spoilt the game as a spectacle.

Nadal settled the quicker of the two players, running away with the first set in 41 minutes.

World number four Murray mounted a sterner challenge in the second set, but was again broken twice.

“He definitely deserved the win, he played great in difficult conditions and dealt with it incredibly well,” said British number one Murray.

“Unfortunately I couldn’t get the job done but I’ve had a great start to the year and hopefully I can keep it going and push up the rankings.”

Nadal was delighted with his victory – his second Indian Wells title after his triumph in 2007 – which continued his great start to the season after his maiden Australian Open crown in January.

“I win in Australia, I win here,” said Nadal. “I’m very happy with everything.”

The match went with serve until the fourth game of the first set, when Nadal made the breakthrough.

The Spaniard wasted his first break point of the match with a mis-hit backhand, but took the game shortly afterwards when Murray was unable to control a volley.

Nadal took a decisive advantage in the sixth game when he broke his opponent for the second successive time, drawing Murray into the net before bunting the ball into the open court.

Murray stopped the rot at the start of the second as he took the first game to love and the next three games all went with serve.

But Murray was becoming more and more frustrated by the wind and Nadal broke in the fifth game, finishing a marathon rally with a well-controlled lob.

Murray tried to fight his way back into the match but Nadal once again broke in the seventh game, before serving out the match to love.

England ‘favourite to host IPL’

Filed under: 1, Sports — Beautiful Maldives @ 10:38 am

England and Wales are favourites to host the Indian Premier League, which is being moved out of the Asian country because it clashes with elections.

South Africa is the other possibility but their board is not optimistic, believing England is the preferred choice for the Twenty20 tournament.

IPL commissioner Lalit Modi revealed a decision could be made on Monday.

“I don’t think we will have a decision until late this evening because we need to go through every detail,” he said.

Modi said it would be a difficult choice and it would simply come down to who was best suited to host the tournament, which is set to run from 10 April until 24 May.

He had no choice but to move it from India because the government could not guarantee safety and security resources with elections happening at the same time.

Gerald Majola, chief executive of Cricket South Africa, said he believed his country was on standby should England not be able to host the competition.

He said: “I must say from my side, I’m not that optimistic. The real reason I say so is the timing.

“A decision has to be taken shortly. So I suspect they would be speaking to maybe their preferred choice and I think South Africa is just a standby to whoever their choice is.”

England and Wales chief executive David Collier was flying from the West Indies, where England are playing, to London to hold talks with his Indian counterparts.

There are a lot of logistics to sort out as the tournament would clash with the start of the county season and the beginning of the West Indies’ tour of England.

Somerset chairman Andy Nash believed England had an 80% chance of hosting the lucrative tournament, which sees eight domestic teams with an array of international talent – includng Kevin Pietersen and Andrew Flintoff – competing.

Nash told BBC Radio 5 Live: “Obviously there is an awful lot yet to be worked out, but, at the end of the day, England invented the Twenty20 format.

“Should it be possible to bring the IPL here, I’m sure there will be enormous crowds and a huge amount of interest.

“Logistically it won’t be simple but if the will is there it can be overcome, I’m sure.

“Cricket can achieve remarkable things if people work together.

“Once the ECB are aware of the requirements of the BCCI and IPL, they will move heaven and earn to try and accommodate this.”

West Ham & Blades end Tevez saga

Filed under: 1, Sports — Beautiful Maldives @ 4:54 am

West Ham and Sheffield United have reached an out-of-court settlement over the long-running Carlos Tevez saga.

Striker Tevez, 25, helped West Ham seal Premier League survival in 2006/2007, while the Blades were relegated.

The Blades argued Tevez was ineligible to play and an independent hearing ruled in favour of their claim for compensation from West Ham.

A compensation figure has not been disclosed but the BBC understands it is in the region of £15m in instalments.

Championship side Sheffield United’s chairman Kevin McCabe said: “We are happy and satisfied with the settlement with West Ham.

“Throughout the finalisation of the terms for the agreement, the discussions were friendly, co-operative and in the best of spirit with both the Blades and Hammers advisory teams.

“We are two clubs with a fantastic footballing history who now want to move on and focus on the business of playing football – hopefully for us against the Hammers in the Premier League next season.”

A tribunal into the level of compensation Sheffield United would receive was set to start on Monday but will now not be needed.

West Ham chief executive Scott Duxbury stated: “For everyone concerned, the time was right to draw a line under this whole episode.

“We have had very positive discussions over a number of days with Sheffield United and acknowledge their willingness to resolve this in the best interests of both clubs.”

The Hammers were fined £5.5m in April 2007 by the Premier League for breaking rules over third-party agreements when bringing striker Tevez and fellow Argentine Javier Mascherano to Upton Park.

They were not docked points and, ultimately, went on to ensure their Premier League survival, with Tevez playing a key part with his goals, including three in the last two games.

He has since moved on to Manchester United, while midfielder Mascherano is now at Liverpool.

A Premier League and Football Association inquiry launched in January continues to investigate the conduct of some West Ham representatives into the affair.

England submits back-up 2022 bid

England want to be considered as hosts of the 2022 World Cup if the bid for the 2018 tournament fails.

The Football Association made official bids for both tournaments on Monday and will be in the race for 2022 as long as the 2018 hosts are not European.

Bid chairman Lord Triesman said: “We are maximising our chances of winning the right to host the world’s greatest sporting occasion.”

Fifa will choose the hosts for 2018 and 2022 in December 2010.

Countries have been asked to declare their intention to bid for just one of the two tournaments or to prepare presentations to host either.

The Netherlands and Belgium have already made a joint bid, while Australia has submitted its application.

Further bids are also expected from the United States, Russia, Mexico, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea and Qatar. A joint bid from Spain and Portugal is also likely before the deadline closes on Monday.

Lord Triesman added: “This marks another step forward on our journey to bring the Fifa World Cup to England and our team are focused on delivering the best bid possible to Fifa.”

The next stage will be to present Fifa with details of stadiums, transport and hotels needed to stage the event.

South Africa will host the 2010 World Cup and the 2014 event will be in Brazil.

Clashes in Sierra Leone capital

Filed under: 1, Male' News — Beautiful Maldives @ 4:45 am

Police in Sierra Leone have used tear gas to disperse supporters of the two main political parties after clashes in the capital, Freetown.

There are reports that several women were raped during the violence, which has escalated in recent days.

There is a great rivalry between the two main political parties.

In recent days this has spilled over into violent clashes that threaten to set back the country, still battling the legacy of a decade-long civil war.

Outside the headquarters of the opposition Sierra Leone People’s Party, the police fired tear gas and warning shots to disperse angry supporters of the two parties – some of them armed with machetes.

The reports that several women have been raped in the clashes are a worrying reminder of the brutality which most Sierra Leoneans thought the country had put behind it.

Hostility

Tension has clearly heightened since the widely-praised elections held 18 months ago.

Last week a by-election had to be postponed in the district of Pujehun because of violence.

There were then clashes on Friday in Freetown, and both the APC and SLPP radio stations were shut down amid claims that they had been stoking the hostility.

Whilst both parties blame each other, ordinary Sierra Leoneans view the violence as pointless. But they are well aware it urgently needs to be stopped as it has the potential to spread and re-open ethnic divisions.
